Translation

TWC 535 Global Issues in Tech Comm

For the translation assignment I had to take part of a document and translate to another language using Google translate, translate it back to English, analyze the results, then revise it so it made sense in both languages. This process was an eye-opener and affected my writing on all future assignments as I saw that many of the words and phrases I used in my writing were just filler and could be simplified to improve my audience’s understanding.

MSTC Outcome: While this assignment sounded rather simple, trying to revise a document to fix the changes from translation as well as be culturally aware was challenging. Not only did the process of translating back and forth make me change the wording, it also made me change my phrasing so the document would be understandable in both cultures and languages.

Keep it Simple: Don’t use a big word or phrase when a small, simple one will say the same thing.

OpEd

TWC 552 Information in the Digital Age

The OpEd assignment required me to select a controversial topic and write a memo to persuade my audience to agree with my opinion. In order to do this I had to do some research to find information that backed up my opinion and, more importantly, I also had to find information that backed up my opposition’s opinion. Seeing both sides of the argument allowed me to craft my document to explain my position more effectively while simultaneously rebutting the other side.

MSTC Outcome: The genre for this assignment was a memo. Therefore, I had to craft my argument into a short, concise document. Within these parameters, I also had to consider the community and culture of both my side of the argument and that of my opposition.

Keep it Simple: Research both sides of an argument or issue to succinctly persuade others to my position.
